21 Days of Prayer - Day 2
As you think about and plan for 2019, what is one thing you desire of God? Do you ever feel wrong about asking God for things that you want? If so, think about it for a moment. If God is your Heavenly Father, isn’t it natural to express your needs and desires to him? Jesus talked a lot about prayer. Matthew 6:25-34 are some of Jesus words from what is called the Sermon on the Mount.
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
We are encouraged not to be anxious about what we need. This is not the same as not asking God for it. I’ve witnessed my kids to be anxious about something that I could have helped them with if they’d only asked me. Typically they’ve never doubted that their basic needs will be met. Food has always been there when its needed. They’ve had a home to live in and a parent to attend to their requests. And still, they can get anxious about things that seem small to me.
The last line reminds us to keep small things small by making big things big. The big things are the kingdom of God and his righteousness. God’s “kingdom” means at least His rule in and through His people. He is King. His righteousness speaks to the life we live following the King.
So, what is one thing your desire of God in 2019? Take some time and list out all of the things that come to mind first. Don’t edit this list before you write it, just be honest between you and God as to the things you feel the weight of first.
Did you do that? Good! Jesus says that God knows these needs before you ever ask. Still you need to ask and trust him to meet these through His own wisdom and power.
Now, look at the list and ask God, “what is something you want me to want from you?”
If you hear from God on this, write it down and ask God to provide what you need to want and do what He wills.
